Doing Business in Emerging Markets During a Global Economic Downturn: Managing Risk and Identifying Opportunities

DOING BUSINESS IN EMERGING MARKETS DURING A GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN : Managing Risk and Identifying Opportunities

Fears of a worldwide recession and persistent systemic tensions in the international financial tensions are fuelling an indiscriminate risk aversion. The international situation changed radically after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, with a sudden and massive dry-up in liquidity and financing available. The previous US and EU slowdown in demand has brutally turned into a collapse, with households, corporate and financial institutions unable to access financial resources.

After having believed that emerging markets could remain partly immune to the international turbulences, perception have shifted to a wave of panic regarding both the banking, payment, cyclical, exchange rate and asset market situation in most emerging countries.

The critical element today is to be able to discriminate between individual countries and markets, as only such acute discrimination can minimize the potential losses and highlight opportunities.

Hear from our invited speaker Dr Thierry Apoteker, an Economist who often shares his insights with multilateral institutions such as European Commission and UNCTAD, on how to manage your risks and identify opportunities.

PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS

How to discriminate between the major risks and the potential opportunities for the medium-term: risk analysis, intensity of transmission, and economic potential over the medium-term

- Risk analysis has to focus today on the most critical vulnerability points: countries' external performances and financing, strength of banking systems and currency valuation

- The transmission from the international crisis will be through trade and finance alike

- The world will not disappear: do not forget the emerging markets' potential

How to incorporate the risks and use them in a strategic approach to emerging markets during these turbulent times: an application to China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Gulf countries

- The TAC RiskMonitor tool allows identifying degrees and nature of risks

- Political and governance issues to be taken on board

- This leads to operational suggestions on risk mitigation policies

- The estimation of a "structural" cost of capital for investments in these economies combined with medium-term potential can help identifying the most attractive opportunities

SPEAKER'S PROFILE

He started as a junior economist in a French think tank (B.I.P.E.) and then moved to Banque Indosuez (now Calyon) where he set up the country risk division before becoming the bank's chief economist and head of the Research Department.
